Family farm
Groningen
On our organic farm (30 hectare) in the North of The Netherlands we have chickens (for meat production), orchards (apples, berry's, prunes) and wheat, potatoes, garlic, white clover, peas, beans and summer flowers. It's not a big farm, but a place where one can do and experience many things. Weeding, harvesting, taking care of the apple trees, picking flowers and berries, cooking, delivering... and end of August, beginning September; apple picking!
Our goal is to produce healthy and tasteful food, taking care of the environment and giving space to birds, plant, trees, insects and other animals. Also the building, that was erected around 1850, needs care and preservation. And we love to share our place with people who appreciate nature, culture and agriculture.
Organic methods: We use chicken manure mixed with straw as fertilizer; we try to stimulate a balanced insect life in the orchards to diminish plagues; we grow and plants to feed different kinds of insects; we weed.

My first WWOOF experience was at Piet and Angela’s farm, and it was honestly amazing. They were super kind and welcoming, and they made us feel right at home. Everyone we met there, including the other volunteers, was also really nice and friendly.
We got to learn a lot about the farm, the apples, and the apple-picking process. It wasn’t hard at all—in fact, it was quite relaxing because it doesn’t make you overthink. We also had a delicious tea and coffee break in between. I even got to learn how to drive a small tractor, which was a lot of fun.
We ate fresh, organic vegetables every day, and they were absolutely delicious. Our room was very nice, and they do help if you need anything.
During the weekdays, my sister and I spent a few hours each day picking apples, while the weekends were completely free. After work, we had plenty of time to wander around Groningen’s city center and enjoy its beautiful spots. The sea isn’t too far away either, though we didn’t manage to see it this time.
We had a car, so getting around was easy, but even without one it wouldn’t have been a problem, as there’s a train station just a few minutes away that takes you directly to the city center, along with a bus option too.
We shared so many fun and memorable moments throughout our stay, and we will definitely be coming back one day to visit Piet and Angela. They even gave us some apples and other delicious treats as a gift at the end, which was so thoughtful. Thank you again 🩵
