*One more room available this autumn and winter, preferably for a couple* Welcome to Burgerboerderij de Patrijs! We started at the end of 2022 on a conventional dairy farm in Laren (Gelderland) with the aim of transforming it into a nature-inclusive and ecological farm. We have already taken big steps: the cows spend more time outdoors, receive locally sourced feed, and are strip grazing in herb-rich pastures. Additionally, we produce our own cheese and dairy, which we sell in 5 unmanned shops in the region. The farm is always bustling with life, featuring an active team, numerous volunteers, and visitors and customers, ensuring there's always something happening. *** We have two positions available for wwoofers. When you send us a message, please let us know what you would like to do and why, and what experience you have. 1. Helping out making cheese and dairy. You will learn to make cheese and dairy and help in the production rooms. You can also spend some time doing other tasks like working in the garden, helping with the cows or doing distribution to our shops, but the main focus will be on cheese and dairy. 2. Helping out with the cows Milking, caring for calves and youngstock, feeding cows and calves, helping with strip grazing, fencing, harvesting grass, other farm jobs. You can also spend some time in the cheese and dairy production, but the main focus will be on the dairy cows. You can only apply for this position if you have some experience with dairy farming, animal husbandry and/or arable farming. ** We expect you to contribute about 25-30 hours per week, but you have a say in how those hours are distributed throughout the week. Usually the weekends are pretty relaxed, and you are welcome to borrow one of our bikes and discover the beautiful surroundings! ** We have several bedrooms in the farmhouse. You will share the bathroom with other wwoofers and interns. In the kitchen, you'll join the other residents for meals, and you'll also regularly cook meals for the group. Cooking together with others is also an option of course 😄 ** We are located in a beautiful part of the Netherlands. You can enjoy lovely walks and bike rides here (you can borrow a bike from us). Zutphen (40 minutes by bike) is a charming town with much to explore. ** Please, do not use AI to help write your application, we don't mind if your English is not perfect. We really appreciate honesty and would like to get an insight into YOUR motivation, and to get an idea of who YOU really are. That's the only way we find out whether there's a good mutual fit. Thanks :-) It's alright if your English is not perfect, although a somewhat decent level is required. Making cheese and dairy and taking care of cows are sensitive processes, and we need to be able to trust that you're able to understand and follow instructions well. This is not the right location if your main aim is to learn to speak English.

After three months on this farm, I was able, thanks to the many volunteers (my favorite : Erik, Corrie, Jaap, and Ina) and the farm staff (a big thank you to Joanne, Johannes, Alijanna, Marcel, and Wilco) to have a wonderful first experience abroad. I gained skills and autonomy, especially in processing, through the various cheese and dairy product recipes. If you're looking to discover a well-developed organic and ecological farm, this is the place for you! :)

Phew~ Two months here really trained my muscles! I expected to do some hard work with my arms, but my brain had its fair share of workout, too. I can't say how grateful I am to be a part of the farm. Without a doubt, I got to learn the making of cheese and dairy products. If you want to learn the craft, you're looking at the right place. Amazing cheese and dairy makers and volunteers that are happy to share their knowledge. My greatest takeaway is out of expectation: the craft of managing a burgerboerderij. From tending the cows, the soil, to production of products, to retail sales... There's always more to learn. The dedication of Joanne and Johannes, and all other team members are undoubtedly to the max. Thank you everyone for... everything! The generosity of sharing knowledge (and food), the understanding of my limit and williness to communicate, the opportunities of trying different tasks... I would recommend at least a six-week commitment to have a thorough experience. I had a wonderful summer and enjoyed my free time cycling.

Joanne has been really welcoming with us ! This farm is enjoyable and we became attached to the cows. If you want to discover how to make and to take care of some dairies and cheese, it is the right place to be ! This farm is really busy because there are lot of jobs to do, so there are always a lot of people. It is not at all a place where you will be alone ! You also have to cook almost for every dinner with the products from the farm : we eat very local food here !

I spent two weeks at the Patrijs. I would recommend staying at least three weeks. It takes at least one good week to start getting used to all the processes, especially in the dairy/cheese (where i mainly worked). It was really interesting to see the behind the scenes of the dairy and cheese production, thank you Marcel and Alijanna! I met so many people on the farm, including of course Joanne, Johannes, Luuk, who live on the farm, but also many volunteers who worked in the cheese and dairy production, and Martin and Bianca who are interns there. It would have been nice to have an additional space (besides the bedrooms) just for the wwoofers/interns to chill during the day, as the weather was not that sunny/warm yet. The second week, I also spent some time baking cakes for the first birthday of the dairy production, I quite enjoyed doing that, and everybody seemed to be pleased as well. The morning of my last day, I even saw the birth of calf. I recommend the Patrijs, good community, very interesting concept with the "burgerboerderij".

I don't even know how to start (One of my favorite experiences in life) Since I started looking for farms in Holland, this was one of the ones that caught my attention the most. From the first moment I wrote to Joanne about my interest in the farm, I had a quick response from her and the process flowed very well. I really enjoyed learning about dairy and cheese with Marcel/Alijanna, they are great teachers and great leaders. Every day volunteers of different ages arrive to help make cheeses and dairy products, definitely sharing every day with them, learning from each one and getting to know them was something great. The farm is located in a beautiful place, full of trees, incredible sunsets, birds and lots of living nature. Many times after work, I would go for a walk, relax, spend time with myself, which I really enjoyed and I learned a lot of things. I had never been so close to the calves and from the first moment I met Annie, I fell in love. It was a gift to be able to visit her daily, to see how she was getting bigger every day. Every day we all had dinner together at 7:30, many times I cooked with the other volunteers and it was great, being able to share recipes, techniques and, after a great day of work, a great dinner, is priceless. Meeting Martin and Rianne (a boy who is doing his internship and Rianne a wwoofer) was incredible, talking after a long day, learning from each of them, it was something very cool, Thank you Joanne, Johannes,Luuk and many more!
